In a year of cancellations and lockdowns, the ladies of Warkworth Gamefish and Sandspit Yacht Club managed to hold their annual fishing competition. The success of this comp is based around having a great party after the fishing, so it was important not to have restricted numbers when this was held. We had 34 entrants, including 2 junior anglers, slightly less than last year.
Taking into account the extras (gotta feed our man slaves) who attend the prizegiving dinner, limiting the entrants to 40-50 is about right for the amount of space.
The day started very calm, with the wind getting up a little during the day, that combined with the swell made for some queasy stomachs, but not enough to put the ladies off their fishing. The top junior prize went to Isla Levet with a 62.5cm snapper, caught on a bright pink very small junior rod. With her sister Leticia taking out 2nd prize.
Lexi Carter 1st place 53cm
Poppy Stenbeck 2nd place 48cm
Hannah van der Velden 3rd place 46cm
Poppy Stenbeck 1st place 75cm
Poppy Stenbeck 2nd place 73cm
Hannah van der Velden 3rd place 71cm
Nicola Rathe 4th place 70.5cm
Linda Petersen 5th place 65cm
Four ladies were eligible for the average snapper length 41cm, which was decided by a reduction draw and won by Justine Longland. Justine gets to drive a Jaguar car for a weekend and $500 from Advanced Concrete Pumping towards accommodation.
The travel prize $1500 travel voucher, was won byJenna Smeets fishing on Slap ‘n Tickle. Sponsored by Southey’s Group and Archibald & Shorter.
As usual, the crowd came dressed to the nines, there were lots of cowboys and girls, American Native Indians, and some colourful characters from south of the border in Mexico.
Best dressed team went to the crew on Karakia, who brought their horse along for a feed of fish and chips. Next year’s dress up theme is Hawaiian, so you have lots of time to get ready for next year.
The lucky skippers draw was won by Alby Petersen.
We would like to thank our sponsors; with the assistance of these generous companies, we enjoy a great event.
